ORACLE ANNOUNCES SHIPMENT OF NEW VERSION OF ORACLE CODASYL DBMS
Oracle CODASYL DBMS V6.1 offers advanced features that improve performance while reducing
downtime for business critical application environments
REDWOOD SHORES, CA April, 1995 -- Oracle Corporation today announced the release of Oracle
CODASYL DBMS V6.1 for immediate shipment. This latest release brings advanced features --
such as multiversion support, enhanced database management utilities, and performance
improvements -- to a stable database product. As a result, Oracle CODASYL DBMS customers
gain improved performance, greater throughput, and reduced downtime, along with greater
reliability. Oracle's new release was hailed by major software partners.
A high-performance database that performs reliably year after year, Oracle CODASYL DBMS is
typically found in business critical applications in the insurance industry and in
large-scale manufacturing industries such as semiconductors and discrete manufacturing.
Oracle CODASYL DBMS was formerly known as DEC DBMS, and was acquired by Oracle as a
part of the Rdb product family.
"Consilium has had a long history of DEC DBMS support with our MES application
WorkStream," said Edward O'Rourke, WorkStream Lead Product Manager, Consilium Inc.,
Mountain View, CA. "As our WorkStream customer base is primarily comprised of DBMS
users, we are indeed pleased that Oracle is committed to the active support of the
product."
"Clearly, Oracle is listening to and responding to the needs
of Oracle CODASYL DBMS customers," said Bryan Holland of Software Concepts International, Nashua
NH, a leading supplier of Oracle CODASYL DBMS expertise.
Because Oracle CODASYL DBMS shares a common code base with Oracle Rdb, Oracle can
efficiently invest in advancedengineering for both products at once. In this new release
of Oracle CODASYL DBMS, those features include:
Multiversion support. By enabling Oracle CODASYL DBMS users to run old
and new versions of DBMS side by side on the same processor, DBMS V6.1's multiversioning
offers two main benefits. First, users can test their new applications safely with no
downtime and without requiring a parallel test environment. Second, users will be able to
run more than one version in a full production environment, preserving any applications
that have not yet ported to the latest DBMS version. "Because our clients can use the
new multiversioning feature to perform "rolling upgrades," they can transition
to this new version sooner and with more confidence," noted Mr. Holland.
Database verification improvements. The upgraded database
verification routine significantly reduces the time it takes users to test database
integrity. "Our experience shows that this optimization of DBO/VERIFY runs 5 to 10
times faster than previous versions," said Mr. Holland. "At the same time,
customers get a more thorough verification, with improved diagnostics, which helps them in
maintenance tasks."
Database statistics package enhancements. To allow database
administrators to more easily glean detailed information on real-time database use, DBMS
V6.1's RELOAD AREA utility now more quickly splits database areas into manageable pieces,
thus easing administrators efforts to fine-tune database performance.
SQL interface. VIA Digital Equipment Corporation's DB Integrator
Gateway, Oracle CODASYL DBMS V6.1 users will now be able to use popular front-end tools
that take advantage of SQL protocols. "Our customers must be constantly up and
running; otherwise they are losing money," said Chuck Rozwat, Vice President, Oracle
Rdb Products Division. "The new features offer significantly reduced downtime with
dramatic improvements in performance and reliability."
